Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The topic of this Special Issue is “Sustainability Issues in Fintech and Logistics for e-Commerce in the Fourth Industrial Revolution Era”. Electronic commerce has been developed rapidly over the last few decades. The world’s largest platforms including Amazon, eBay, Alibaba, and Taobao are causing a revolution, especially in the areas of fintech and logistics, and new innovations in e-commerce are emerging through 4th industrial revolution with AI and big data. Furthermore, AI and machine learning built on big data have become an essential driving force for e-commerce market players such as Amazon’s Alexa, WeChat, Alipay, and Netflix, to name a few, who are radically changing the competitive landscape.
Blockchain technologies are emerging with a great potential to change extant business processes, for example in transportation and logistics, which will improve efficiency, transparency and security in global transactions and trade as well as greatly reduce bureaucracy and paperwork. Softbank and Alibaba have invested in diverse start-ups in technological innovations outside of Silicon Valley. However, notwithstanding such a promising future, the stakeholders in e-commerce and fintech in tandem with the logistics industry are facing a critical issue of sustainability with a competitive advantage based on emerging technologies.
To cope with this, they should address several key challenges to building trust and good relationships with their customers with these new technologies. To the best of our knowledge, a number of papers related to the sustainability issue in fintech and logistics for e-commerce have already appeared in international journals in diverse fields. However, we find there is great potential to make further contributions to the e-commerce and sustainability literature by expanding the research coverage and adopting new methodologies that reflect emerging digital technologies and techniques, including AI and machine learning. Having said that, we have tried to fill the gap, aiming to open chances to discuss the increasing importance of sustainability and the great potential to make contributions in the areas of, but not limited to, fintech and logistics.
This Special Issue comprises selected papers from “21st International Conference on Electronic Commerce” to be held in Haeundae Grand Hotel, Busan, Korea on 3–5 July 2019. The conference website is https://icec.net.

Call for Papers for the Special Issue:
Smart Supply Chains and intelligent Logistics Service
The rapid development of technologies such as big data, cloud computing, Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, and artificial intelligence have led to supply chain innovation, and smart supply chains (SSCs) emerge. The SSC is an organizational form that relies on the internet and big data, aims to enhance customer value, and realizes efficient coordination of product design, procurement, production, sales and service through collaborative sharing, innovation mode and advanced technology. Besides SSCs, the intelligent logistics services (ILSs) also have been widely used in global enterprises, which emphasize on the integration of the IoT, the sensor network and the Internet.
In recent years, the emergence of SSCs and ILSs has changed the way supply chain operates. Not only large manufacturing companies but also many platform companies, such as Amazon, Alibaba, Cainiao Logistics, JD Logistics, are vigorously promoting the construction of SSCs and ILSs. Compared to the traditional supply chain and logistics systems, the SSCs and ILSs need a comprehensive application of technologies. These characteristics make the management process more complicated and deserve deeper explorations. This SI on “Smart Supply Chains and Intelligent Logistics Services” focuses on the theories and applications of SSCs and ILSs. The SI accepts scientific research based on various methods, such as optimization models, algorithms, quantitative case analysis and second-hand public data analysis. This SI will contribute to the expanding literature in SSCs and ILSs, and provides academics and the operations managers with a better understanding these important areas.
This SI will cover the following topics:
-
Operations mechanisms of smart supply chains and intelligent logistics services
-
Transformations from traditional supply chains to smart supply chains
-
Systems development from traditional logistics services to intelligent logistics services
-
Technological innovation mode of smart supply chains and intelligent logistics services
-

Aims and Scope
The theme of this special issue will focus on the exploration of an emerging and rapidly developing form of collaborative consumption, popularly known as the “sharing economy”. This special issue aims to provide a forum for scholars, practitioners and policy-makers of sharing economy enabled digital platform to discuss the development strategies and prospects. Sharing economy relates closely to what is currently “hot” in the world of practice (e.g., Airbnb, Lending club, Uber, Didi, Mobike) and provides a convenient way of ‘sharing’ goods, services and other resources with the help of digital technology to achieve effective resource allocation and cost saving. The development of sharing economy in online communities suggests significant changes for the form of transportation, tourism, work location, etc. Previously unknown individuals acquired a unique way to meet new people, thus improve the social contacts and grow online communities. These broad impacts give rise to novel and important research questions and analytical approaches.
The aim of the special issue is to address these issues concerned with novel and important research questions, analytical approaches and make contributions on how emerging innovations like sharing economy can be used to bring about socioeconomic development (i.e., the process of social and economic development). In particular, the scope of the special issue includes perspective of quantitative and computational studies involving big data set, case studies, interpretive work, design science and action research related to sharing economy, creative conceptual or theoretical work on the effect of sharing economy, sharing economy enabled digital platforms in developing regions, and sharing economy with ICT for development etc. This special issue emphasizes the sharing economy in the context of developing parts of the world. We welcome papers that contribute to how digital platforms enable a sharing economy that may or may not bring about socioeconomic development. It is open to theoretical and empirical studies deploying a range of methodologies.
Topics addressed
We would like to invite the authors to submit their research on sharing economy enabled digital platform for development from theoretical, technological, social, psychological, econometric, behavioral, and design science perspectives. Research deploying different theoretical lenses could focus on behavioral study and system design, methods, modeling, and techniques in addressing various aspects of sharing economy enabled digital platform for development. The special issue will focus on a wide range of topics including but not limited to:
1. The impact of sharing economy on socioeconomic development 2. The strategies and success factors of sharing economy enabled digital platform.
3. Case studies of sharing economy enabled digital platforms for development.
